This guided meditation script is designed to guide their clients through the practice of urge surfing. Urge surfing helps individuals observe their cravings, impulses, or emotional sensations without being overwhelmed by them. Whether the urge is related to food, substance, or any other mental or physical craving, this technique encourages clients to ride the wave of the urge with mindfulness, letting it come and go without reacting. This practice fosters greater self-awareness and control, enabling clients to cultivate a balanced response to their urges. Feel free to use this script in your sessions to help your clients manage and transform their cravings through mindfulness.
Let’s get started.
Urge Surfing Guided Meditation Script:
Imagine this urge as a wave in the ocean. At first, it may feel small, but over time, it starts to build. It may rise in intensity and feel more pressing. As the wave builds, you may begin to notice thoughts like, "I need to act on this," or "This feeling is overwhelming." Instead of reacting to these thoughts, continue to breathe and observe the wave. See it as a natural part of your experience. Waves come and go, and so do urges.
As the wave continues to rise, observe the sensations in your body. You may feel a pull, a tension, or an anxiety. Stay with it, feeling the full experience of the wave, but don’t get lost in it. Stay grounded in your body. Feel your feet connected to the earth, your hands resting calmly by your side. With every breath, breathe in the energy of the wave, and then breathe out the tension it brings. You are not your urge, and you are not controlled by it. You have the power to witness it.
As the wave peaks, notice how it feels. Does the intensity grow? Does it make you feel unsettled or uncomfortable? Notice your body’s reaction without judgment. Allow yourself to feel what you feel, without needing to act on it. Understand that you are in control. The wave will not last forever. It will reach its peak, and then it will begin to fall.
With each breath, imagine the wave of the urge starting to diminish. It may be difficult at first, but trust that the wave will pass. Notice how the urge begins to lose its intensity, becoming smaller with each inhale and exhale. With every breath, you let go of any attachment to the urge. You are simply riding the wave, feeling it rise and fall without clinging to it.
As the wave begins to subside, observe the peace that follows. Notice how the urge, which once felt so powerful, is now fading into the background. It is no longer demanding your attention. Feel the calmness that fills the space where the urge once was. With every breath, you feel more grounded, more at peace. You can ride out any wave, knowing it will pass.
Stay with this peaceful state for a moment longer. With each breath, feel your body becoming lighter, your mind clearer. You have not reacted to the urge; you have simply observed it. The power of the urge has diminished, and you are left with a deep sense of control and calm.
Now, let’s take a moment to reflect. The practice of urge surfing is not about avoiding or eliminating your cravings, but about observing them without getting swept away. It’s about noticing that urges are temporary and do not need to dictate your actions. The more you practice observing your urges with mindfulness, the more you strengthen your ability to stay calm and centered in any situation.
Remember that urges, like waves, will come and go. Sometimes they may be gentle, and other times they may be intense. But no matter how strong they seem, they will always subside. You are capable of staying grounded and mindful through it all. The more you practice this skill, the easier it becomes to ride the waves of life with grace and ease.
As we near the end of this meditation, take a moment to feel the effects of this practice. You have shown yourself that you are strong enough to observe and release any urge. You have connected with your inner peace, and you can return to this calm place whenever you need it.
Feel the power of your breath, and the stillness within. Carry this sense of control and awareness with you as you move through the rest of your day. Know that you are capable of handling any urge that arises with calm and clarity.
When you are ready, gently bring your awareness back to the present moment. Wiggle your fingers and toes, stretch if you’d like, and gently open your eyes. Carry the calm energy of this practice with you into your life.
You have the ability to ride the waves of your urges with mindfulness and peace. Keep trusting in your ability to stay centered and present. With time, this practice will become a powerful tool in your journey toward self-awareness and balance.
