Some clients need more than a quick reset. They need time: time to arrive, time to unwind layer by layer, and time to simply rest in silence without being rushed toward the end. This long guided meditation script is written for meditation teachers, yoga instructors, therapists, coaches and wellness professionals who want to offer an extended, unhurried session, the kind that fits a retreat morning, a workshop, a weekend class or a private session with plenty of room to breathe. It moves slowly through settling, breath, a full release of the body and a gentle visualization of a quiet lake at dawn, with long pauses that let your clients sink into a deep and spacious calm.
Depending on how long you hold each pause, this script runs from about 35 to 45 minutes, and you can stretch the silences further for experienced groups or shorten them for newer meditators. The script below is written to be read aloud, word for word, directly to your clients. Read it slowly, let your voice soften as the session deepens, and trust the pauses. In a long meditation, the silence is not empty time to fill. It is often where the deepest rest happens.
Let’s get started.
Long Guided Meditation Script:
Welcome. For the next while, there is nowhere else you need to be and nothing you need to do. This time is simply for you.
Find a position that you can stay in comfortably for a long while. You might lie down on your back with a cushion under your knees, or sit supported in a chair with your feet resting on the floor. Take a moment to adjust anything that needs adjusting. Loosen anything that feels tight. Let yourself be completely supported.
When you’re ready, gently close your eyes, or let your gaze rest softly on the floor in front of you.
(Pause)
Begin by noticing the places where your body meets the surface beneath you. The back of your head. Your shoulders. Your back. Your hips. Your legs and heels. Feel the weight of your body being held. You don’t have to hold yourself up right now. Let the ground do that for you.
(Pause for several breaths)
Now bring your attention to your breath. You don’t need to change it. Just notice it. Notice the cool air as it enters through your nose, and the slightly warmer air as it leaves. Notice the gentle rise of your chest and belly as you breathe in, and the soft fall as you breathe out.
Take a slow breath in… and a long, easy breath out.
Again, breathe in slowly… and breathe out, letting the exhale be a little longer than the inhale.
One more time, in… and out, letting go of a little more with each breath.
(Pause)
Let your breath return to its own natural rhythm. Each exhale is an invitation to soften, to arrive a little more fully in this moment.
(Pause for several breaths)
We have plenty of time, so let’s move slowly through the body, letting each part relax in its own way.
Bring your attention to your feet. Notice your toes, the soles of your feet, your heels. As you breathe out, imagine your feet growing heavy and warm. Let them rest.
(Pause)
Let that warmth move up into your ankles and calves. Feel the muscles of your lower legs loosen and soften. Let your knees relax. Let your thighs grow heavy, sinking down into the surface beneath you.
(Pause)
Now notice your hips and lower back. This is a place where many of us hold tension without realizing it. Breathe into this area and, as you exhale, let it release. Let your belly soften completely. There is no need to hold it in.
(Pause for several breaths)
Bring your awareness to your chest. Feel it rising and falling with each breath. Let your upper back spread and soften. Let your shoulders melt down, away from your ears. Feel the weight of your arms, your elbows, your wrists, your hands. Let your fingers uncurl and rest.
(Pause)
Now notice your neck and throat. Let them soften. Relax your jaw, letting your teeth part slightly. Let your tongue rest gently in your mouth. Soften your cheeks, the small muscles around your eyes, your forehead. Let your whole face become smooth and calm.
(Pause)
Take a moment to feel your whole body at once, from the top of your head to the tips of your toes, resting, heavy and at ease.
(Pause for several breaths)
Now, in your imagination, picture yourself standing at the edge of a quiet lake in the very early morning. The sun has not yet risen, and the sky is a soft blend of pale lavender and gold. The air is cool and still.
Take a moment to look around you. Notice the tall trees along the shore, their reflections resting perfectly on the surface of the water. Notice the stillness. Not a single ripple moves across the lake.
(Pause)
Feel the ground beneath your feet. Perhaps it is soft grass, damp with morning dew, or smooth stones worn gentle by the water. Breathe in the fresh, clean air. Smell the earth, the pine, the faint scent of the water.
(Pause for several breaths)
Near the water’s edge you notice a small wooden dock stretching out over the lake. Walk slowly toward it. Feel each step, unhurried and steady. When you reach the end of the dock, sit or lie down on the smooth, sun-warmed boards, and let yourself rest.
(Pause)
Look out across the water. Notice how still it is, like a mirror holding the whole sky. Your mind can be like this lake. Thoughts may still drift across it, the way a bird might glide over the surface, but the water beneath remains deep and calm.
If a thought comes, simply notice it, and let it pass across the sky of your mind. Then return to the stillness of the lake.
(Pause for one to two minutes)
Now, slowly, the first light of the sun begins to rise above the trees. Watch as a soft golden glow spreads across the surface of the water. Feel the gentle warmth of that light touching your face, your shoulders, your chest.
Let that warmth sink into you with each breath. Breathing in warmth and light. Breathing out anything you no longer need to carry.
(Pause for several breaths)
There is nothing to do here. Nothing to fix and nothing to figure out. Just rest, the way the lake rests, open and quiet beneath the morning sky.
(Pause for two to three minutes)
As you rest here, notice how you feel. Perhaps there is a sense of spaciousness, of having more room inside. Perhaps there is a quiet steadiness. Whatever you notice, let it be just as it is.
Know that this stillness is not only in this lake. It lives within you. You can return to it whenever you need, simply by closing your eyes and remembering the calm, mirror-like water.
(Pause)
In a moment, we will slowly begin to return. There is no hurry.
Take one last look across the lake. Notice the light on the water, the trees along the shore, the gentle quiet of the morning. Then rise from the dock and begin to walk back along the boards to the shore, carrying this calm with you.
(Pause)
Gradually let the image of the lake fade, and become aware once more of your body resting here. Feel the surface beneath you. Notice the sounds in the room around you.
Begin to deepen your breath. Let a little more air in, and a little more energy with it.
(Pause)
Gently wiggle your fingers and your toes. Perhaps roll your wrists and ankles. If it feels good, stretch your arms overhead and take a long, full-body stretch.
(Pause)
If you are lying down, take your time rolling onto one side and resting there for a breath or two before slowly pressing yourself up to sit.
When you’re ready, gently open your eyes. Take in the space around you with soft, unhurried eyes.
Thank yourself for giving yourself this time. Carry the stillness of the lake with you into the rest of your day.
Tips for Facilitators
Time your pauses with a quiet timer rather than guessing, since long silences often feel shorter to the listener than to the person guiding.
Let clients know before you begin that the session is long and that it is completely fine to drift or even doze for a moment.
Leave a few minutes at the end for clients to sit quietly, sip water or share a few words before they get up and move on.
