Advent is a season of waiting, yet for many people the weeks before Christmas feel anything but quiet. Calendars fill up, shopping lists grow, and the deeper invitation of the season, to slow down and make room for hope, is easily lost in the rush. This Advent guided meditation script is written for meditation teachers, pastors, spiritual directors, Christian counselors, retreat leaders, yoga instructors and wellness professionals who want to offer a gentle, faith-friendly pause at the start of a busy December. It works well as an advent meditation for church small groups, Catholic and Christian prayer circles, the opening of an Advent retreat or a quiet one-to-one session, and it helps clients settle the body, breathe more slowly and rest in the simple, steady light of hope.
The practice takes about ten minutes and draws on familiar Advent imagery: a single candle lit in the darkness, the patience of waiting, and the promise that light is on its way. Scripture is gently paraphrased rather than quoted, so it feels welcoming to people at every stage of faith, and it can sit comfortably alongside an Advent wreath lighting, a reading or a time of shared prayer. The script below is written to be read aloud, word for word, directly to your clients. Read slowly, let the pauses breathe, and feel free to light a real candle in the room before you begin.
Let’s get started.
Advent Guided Meditation Script:
Find a comfortable position, either sitting upright with your feet resting on the floor or lying down if that feels better for your body. Let your hands rest gently in your lap or by your sides. When you feel ready, allow your eyes to close, or simply lower your gaze toward the floor.
(Pause)
Take a slow breath in through your nose… and let it go softly through your mouth. Once more, breathe in… and breathe out. Let this moment be a small clearing in the middle of a full season. There is nothing you need to finish right now and nowhere you need to be. For these next few minutes, you are simply invited to wait.
(Pause)
Let your breathing find its own natural rhythm. You don’t need to change it. Just notice the gentle rise as you breathe in, and the quiet fall as you breathe out. In… and out. Each breath arriving like a small gift, without effort, without hurry.
(Pause for several breaths)
Now bring your attention to your shoulders. Notice if they have crept up toward your ears with the busyness of the day. As you breathe out, let them soften and drop. Let your jaw loosen. Let the small muscles around your eyes relax. Feel your back supported by the chair or the floor beneath you. Feel your feet, or your legs, heavy and grounded. Let your whole body rest, the way the earth rests in the stillness of early winter.
(Pause)
If your mind is full of lists and plans, that’s all right. You can set them down beside you for a little while. They will be there when you return. For now, there is only this breath… and this moment.
(Pause)
Now imagine that you are sitting in a quiet room as evening falls. The light outside has faded to deep blue, and the room around you is soft and dim. It isn’t frightening. It is simply the hush of a long winter evening, the kind of quiet that comes before something new.
(Pause)
In front of you is a small table, and on it rests a single candle, not yet lit. Take a moment to notice it. Its shape. Its color. The way it waits, patient and ready.
(Pause)
Now picture the candle being lit. A small flame appears, flickering at first, then growing steady. Watch the soft golden glow spread across the table and reach gently into the room. It doesn’t chase away all of the darkness. It doesn’t need to. Even one small flame is enough to see by.
(Pause for several breaths)
As you rest with this light, remember the ancient promise spoken by the prophets: that people who walked in darkness would see a great light. Let that promise settle into you. Whatever feels dim or uncertain in your life right now, you don’t have to fix it in this moment. You can simply sit beside the light and wait in hope.
(Pause)
Breathe in, and as you do, imagine drawing a little of that warm glow into your chest. Breathe out, and let go of a little of the hurry you’ve been carrying. Breathe in light… breathe out haste. Breathe in hope… breathe out worry.
(Pause for several breaths)
Advent reminds us that waiting is not wasted time. A seed waits in the winter soil. A mother waits for her child. The whole world once waited through long, quiet nights for a promise to be kept. Your waiting matters too. In the stillness, ask yourself gently: what am I waiting for this season? What do I hope for, for myself, for the people I love, for the world?
(Pause)
You don’t need to find a perfect answer. Just let a word or an image rise, and hold it softly, the way you might hold the candle in your hands.
(Pause for several breaths)
Now imagine making a little room inside your heart, as if you were clearing a space by the fire for a guest who is on the way. What could you set aside this December to make that room? Perhaps a little less rushing. Perhaps a few quiet minutes each morning. Perhaps a kinder word for yourself. Let whatever comes simply be noticed, without pressure.
(Pause)
Hear these quiet words, inspired by the psalms: Be still, and know that you are held. Let them echo gently with your breath. Be still… and know… that you are held.
(Pause for several breaths)
Rest here for a few moments in the warm circle of candlelight. Nothing to do. Nothing to prove. Just waiting, peacefully, in hope.
(Pause for several breaths)
Now begin to let the image of the room and the candle gently fade, knowing you can return to it whenever you need. Carry the small flame with you, tucked safely in your heart, a reminder that light is already on its way.
(Pause)
Bring your attention back to your breath. Notice the air moving in and out. Feel the weight of your body resting where you are. Notice the sounds around you, near and far.
(Pause)
Begin to wiggle your fingers and toes. Roll your shoulders gently, or stretch in any way that feels good. Take one more deep breath in… and let it go.
(Pause)
When you’re ready, slowly open your eyes. Take a moment to look around the room. As you step back into the busy days ahead, may you carry a little of this stillness with you, and may hope keep you company as you wait.
Tips for Facilitators
Light a real candle, or the first candle of an Advent wreath, before you begin, and let it burn quietly throughout the meditation.
Leave a few minutes afterward for clients to journal or share the word or image they are carrying into the season.
Repeat the practice on each Sunday of Advent, adding one more candle each week to mark the journey toward Christmas.
